Pride.
It hides in the secret places of our hearts—
the places that appear humble, yet are full of self-dependence,
subtly setting aside God’s matchless power in exchange
for our limited capacity and insecurities.
A subtle refusal of rest.
A noisy embrace of hurry.
And mindless, numbing escapism to make up the difference.
Pride—it hides in the places that appear contrite and submissive,
yet are simply weary of personal toil and leaning
on our own understanding. Choosing to hold onto shame
that was crucified on the cross of Christ,
and to barter for grace that was already freely given.
Oh God, bring this secret, buried pride to the light;
that the mercy of Jesus would not merely illuminate it,
but completely consume it. Jesus, teach our hearts to rest in Your strength,
for it is made perfect in our weakness.
Teach us how to yield to Your Spirit in humble obedience in every area of our lives.
Show us.
